Microsoft observed North Korean threat actors, tracked as Jasper Sleet and Coral Sleet, using generative AI to fabricate entire digital identities, pass job interviews at Western companies, write production-quality malware, and sustain long-term insider access without ever deploying a traditional exploit. Microsoft identified AI-assisted code by its characteristics: emoji markers in code paths, conversational inline comments, overly descriptive variable names, and unnecessary modular abstraction.

Post-Compromise Operations: After gaining access, threat actors use AI as an on-demand research assistant, summarizing directory structures, interpreting error messages from failed privilege escalation attempts, identifying high-value data for exfiltration, and even drafting ransom notes customized to each victim.

The Emerging Threat: Agentic AI and AI-Enabled Malware

Microsoft flags two emerging trends that defenders must watch. First, agentic AI, systems that pursue objectives over time, invoking tools and adapting behavior without continuous human prompting. Not yet observed at scale, but proof-of-concept experiments already demonstrate autonomous reconnaissance, infrastructure management, and post-compromise decision-making. Second, AI-enabled malware that embeds language models at runtime, dynamically generating scripts and adapting behavior in the victim’s environment. Today these are experimental.
